CHICAGO, IL – - The Asian American Coalition of Chicago is pleased to announce it will host its 29th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration, “IT’S TIME……..” on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare, 9300 West Bryn Mawr Avenue in Rosemont. Cocktail reception begins and silent auction and exhibits open at 5:30 p.m.; opening ceremonies are at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner, entertainment and awards ceremonies until approximately 10 p.m.

An event held on this grand of a scale only once a year, Lunar New Year is traditionally the single largest organized annual event in Chicago’s Asian American community. According to the 2010 Census, the Asian Pacific American population in Illinois numbers approximately 586,934, or 4.6% of the statewide population. Ticket sales open Tuesday, November 22, 2011 for this popular event, which usually attracts over 1,000 people. Tickets will be available on a first-funded, first-seated basis. Purchase information will be updated on the website www.aacchicago.org.

Every year a different Asian community takes turn playing host of the Lunar New Year gala. This year it is the Thai American Community, which has thrice before (1988, 1996 and 2004) held the gavel for the Asian Pacific American community’s most important event of the year. The Thai American Association of Illinois (TAAI) holds the leadership honors.

“The Thai American Association of Illinois is proud to be hosting the 29th Annual Asian American Coalition of Chicago Lunar New Year Celebration for the fourth time,” said Vallapa Kongsri, 2012 Chair of the Asian American Coalition of Chicago, and current President of the Thai American Association of Illinois (TAAI). “We invite everyone in the community and friends of the Asian Pacific American community, to join in helping make this year’s Celebration the best ever,” she said.

Numerous dignitaries traditionally attend the festivities, including the Asian consular corps, elected and appointed governmental officials, political candidates, top business and corporate leaders, decision-makers and on-air talent at Chicago’s major media press outlets, and everyone who considers himself or herself a mover and shaker in and around, or for, the Asian Pacific American national movement.

“Some 50 years ago, a group of Thai immigrants consisting of students, scholars, physicians, nurses and others came to Illinois together to express a sense of belonging – these were immigrants who wanted to be with friends and family in a common culture,” reflected Arun Sampanthavivat, 2012 AACC Lunar New Year Co-Chair, (and Chef/Owner, Arun’s Thai Restaurant in Chicago.)

“To gain approval from all members, they designated December 5th, His Majesty King Bhumipol’s birthday, as the day they would host an annual celebration. The Thai American Association of Illinois was established for this purpose. The new organization quickly saw a larger purpose in the needs of the Thai community. TAAI became a service organization for Thai residents in Illinois and elsewhere. Soon enough, TAAI found itself associates with other Asian communities and the American public at large.” said Sampanthavivat.

“Asian Pacific Americans have contributed tremendously to this country. Economically, we are stronger, but politically, we only have begun to feel a new sense of consciousness. Yes, we are increasingly visible – and being visible is a key to making ourselves stronger politically. The Lunar New Year Celebration makes us visible like nothing else can. It’s time…….. “ said Sampanthavivat.

AWARDS

The Coalition plans to award its 2012 Community Service Awards, its Youth Who Excels Awards, its prestigious Pan Asian American Ping Tom Memorial Award – its highest award, and its Grand Asian American Sandra Otaka Memorial Award that evening. The Coalition renamed its Pan Asian Award in 1996 after the late legendary Chicago civic leader Ping Tom. Ping Tom was also one of the original founders of the Asian American Coalition. The Grand Asian Award is traditionally given to a non-Asian Friend of the Asian American community. The Coalition renamed its Grand Asian Award in 2010 after the late Cook County Circuit Court Judge Sandra Otaka.

MEI-ANN CHEN

The first woman to win the Malko International Conductors Competition (2005), Mei-Ann Chen, 37, is considered one of America’s most exciting and promising young conductors.

The 2011-2012 Chicago Sinfonietta season marks the debut of Mei-Ann Chen, the first new Music Director in the 24-year history of the Chicago Sinfonietta, the nation’s most diverse orchestra. Maestro Chen was selected after a two-year international search to inherit the baton from Dr. Paul Freeman, Founder and now Music Director Emeritus, upon his retirement. Chen assumed the reins in June 2011.

Mei-Ann Chen recently completed her first season as Music Director of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. In great demand as a guest conductor, Chen has appeared with the symphonies of Alabama, Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Colorado, Columbus, Edmonton (Canada), Florida, Fort Worth, Honolulu, National (Washington, DC), Oregon, Pacific, Phoenix, Princeton, Seattle, Toronto, and the Grand Teton Festival Orchestra. Worldwide engagements include all the principal Danish orchestras, BBC Scottish Symphony, Bournemouth Symphony, Graz Symphony, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Tampere Philharmonic, and the Trondheim Symphony.

During the 2011-12 season, she will debut with the symphonies of Jacksonville, Naples, Nashville, Pasadena, Sarasota, as well as the National Symphony of Mexico and the Netherlands Philharmonic at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.

Chen has served as Assistant Conductor of the Oregon Symphony, and has recently completed highly successful tenures as Assistant Conductor of the Atlanta Symphony and Baltimore Symphony; these two positions were sponsored by the League of American Orchestras. Recipient of the 2007 Taki Concordia Fellowship, she has appeared jointly with Marin Alsop and Stefan Sanderling in highly acclaimed subscription concerts with the Baltimore Symphony, Colorado Symphony and Florida Orchestra.

In 2002, Chen was unanimously selected as Music Director of the Portland Youth Philharmonic in Oregon, the oldest of its kind and the model for many of the youth orchestras in the United States. During her five-year tenure with the orchestra, she led its sold-out debut in Carnegie Hall, received an ASCAP award for innovative programming, and developed new and unique musicianship programs for the orchestra’s members. She was honored with a Sunburst Award from Young Audiences for her contribution to music education.

Born in Taiwan, Mei-Ann Chen has lived in the United States since 1989. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from the University of Michigan, where she was a student of Kenneth Kiesler. Prior to that, she was the first student in New England Conservatory’s history to receive master’s degrees, simultaneously, in both violin and conducting. Chen also participated in the National Conducting Institute in Washington, D.C. and the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen.

ABOUT THE CHICAGO SINFONIETTA

The Mission of the Chicago Sinfonietta is to serve as a national model for inclusiveness and innovation in classical music through the presentation of the highest quality orchestral concerts and related programs. The Chicago Sinfonietta aspires to remove the barriers to participation in, and appreciation of classical music through its educational and outreach programs that expose children and their families to classical music, and by providing professional development opportunities for young musicians and composers of diverse backgrounds enabling new, important voices to be heard. This will help America become a true cultural democracy, in which everyone can share fully in its cultural resources and in which all can contribute to it cultural richness.

THE CHICAGO SINFONIETTA STORY

Maestro Paul Freeman founded the Chicago Sinfonietta in 1987 in response to the lack of opportunity for minority classical musicians, composers, and soloists. Twenty-three seasons later, the Chicago Sinfonietta remains as the national model and true trailblazer for promoting diversity and inclusiveness in orchestral music.

Built upon the core value of inclusion, the demographics of the Chicago Sinfonietta’s musicians, guest artists, board of directors, volunteers, and staff mirror those of the audience. Over fifty-five percent of the Sinfonietta’s musicians, fifty-six percent of its Board of Directors, and forty-two percent of the staff are people of color; subsequently, forty-six percent of the audience is people of color. This relationship is a testament to the fact that the music performed, supporting a diverse array of composers and musicians, has the distinct ability to reach new listeners and communities. The vibrant and very real connection between orchestra and audience exudes an undeniable energy and life to each performance, reinforcing the rich culture that exists in Chicago’s communities.

The Chicago Sinfonietta’s vision of inclusiveness extends beyond the concert hall. To develop tomorrow’s musicians and audience members, the orchestra has created innovative outreach programs that annually serve thousands of elementary and high-school age children. In 2008, the Sinfonietta implemented a new program entitled Project Inclusion that provides 1-2 year fellowships to promising orchestral musicians of color. Six fellows performed and rehearsed with the orchestra in the program’s inaugural year in 2008. The program has enjoyed much success.

During the Sinfonietta’s first ten years, the orchestra embarked on a number of international tours performing concerts in Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and the Canary Islands. By 1997, the Sinfonietta had attracted more than 1,100 season subscribers and released nine recordings.

Since 1997, the Sinfonietta has released five additional recordings including the much heralded African Heritage Symphonic Three-Volume Series released by Cedille Records in 2002, seen its subscriber base increase to over 1,600 and watched single ticket sales increase to their largest in history. The Sinfonietta performs subscription seasons at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center and at Lund Auditorium in River Forest. The Sinfonietta also serves as the official orchestra of the Joffrey Ballet.

The Chicago Sinfonietta truly represents the city’s rich cultural landscape, and continues to fulfill the mission of Musical Excellence through Diversity. all can contribute to it cultural richness.

A period piece featuring music, stories, songs and dance, “A Night at Club Chicago” will showcase live performances by three members of the well-known West Coast theatre group, “The Grateful Crane Ensemble” – singer/actress/dancer Keiko Kawashima and singer/actor Kurt Kuniyoshi, with music composer/sound designer Scott Nagatani on keyboards. Executive Producer and Playwright Soji Kashiwagi is bringing three members of The Grateful Crane Ensemble from its Los Angeles home to Chicago for the 2010 JACL National Convention, in the group’s Chicago debut. The Grateful Crane Ensemble has produced a number of shows including the touring show, “The Camp Dance: The Music and the Memories” and “Nihonmachi: The Place to Be.”

A special audio/video presentation will precede the concert, featuring images curated by Tonko Doi and courtesy of the Chicago Japanese American Historical Society and the Japanese American Service Committee (JASC) of Chicago. The presentation will be narrated live by top-rated disc jockey Julian Nieh (Morning Drive Host, “Julian on the Radio” of B96 WBBM-FM) and actress/musician/director Mia Park. Special appearances by 17-year-old singer Kelly Uchima, accompanied by Keith Uchima on guitar, with an interpretive dance by Elaine Wong.

Playwright Keith Uchima’s dialogue takes a poignant look at the exodus from American internment prison camps during World War II, when thousands of Japanese Americans decided to settle eastward. The flavor of returning to the West Coast had become tainted, because so many of them had lost everything. Many of them landed in Chicago, as Uchima puts it, the “buzz” was that in Chicago, there were opportunities. “Discrimination was still lingering, but there were jobs and apartments for rent – and there was a chance to make a new start in this huge, daunting “Windy City.” “

Many first and second generation Japanese Americans (Issei and Nisei) ended up settling in one of three areas in Chicago open to integration: Clark and Division – a swaggering commercial area in the mid-1940’s with restaurants, nightclubs, hotels and small businesses and a bustling urban melting pot; the North Side – especially Uptown, which was in shambles; or Hyde Park – a forward-thinking, integrated area on Chicago’s South Side.

In his script, Uchima writes that, “The need for “Mamasan’s comfort food” was huge, so little Japanese Markets sprung up. Toguri, York, Excel and Star markets were born out of necessity. “Real” Japanese Restaurants and Sushi were not acceptable to the public yet, but JA’s owned, worked in or patronized local restaurants and “Chop Suey” joints like Ding Hoe, Liberty Inn, Miyako, Rib House and Johnny’s 3 Decker.”

“The Nisei and young Sansei had always followed the American pop and jazz scene, even while interned. Now there was a few extra dollars for them to get “gussied up” and go down to the Uptown Theatre for movies which featured live shows, or dancing at the Aragon Ballroom or go clubbing with the “hipsters” at Club DeLisa to see some of the legends of music.”

“A Night in Club Chicago” is funded in part with assistance from Chicago’s Angel Island Theatre Company.

He has appeared on dozens of records and CDs, played in pit bands for musicals, and composed and recorded music for films and corporate projects. In addition to his musical career, Hashimoto has designed the artwork for many CD projects for Chicago area musicians (as well as writing the liner notes for several of them), and has had his reportage of the musical scene widely published (“News From The Trenches”).

Nieh regularly appears at various Chicago and Midwest clubs most every weekend.

Julian Nieh participates in as many community-driven functions as his schedule will allow, feeling a moral obligation to do so.
CHICAGO DRAMATISTS KICKS OFF ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH WITH THE WORLD PREMIERE OF JADE HEART BY WILL COOPER

Special reception will follow the dramatic journey of self exploration and identity on stage

CHICAGO—Chicago Dramatists, 1105 W. Chicago Avenue, is proud present the world premiere of Jade Heart, the spellbinding new play by Senior Network Playwright Will Cooper. Chicago Dramatists’ Artistic Director Russ Tutterow will direct. The production will open May 1 in conjunction with the start of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and run through May 30. A special reception sponsored by Pronto ‘Za will follow the 8 p.m. performance.

Abandoned as an infant on a pile of vegetables, a Chinese girl is adopted by an unmarried American woman and grows up in a white, middle-class American home with only half a jade heart as a clue to her identity. In this dramatic piece, Jade McCullough questions whether she is Chinese, American, or Chinese-American? Through dreams and memories, Jade seeks to find out why she was denied the life she was born to, and how she can become fully herself. Jade Heart poses the ageless question: “Who am I?”

The play explores not only the personal journey of its title character, but the affects of China’s one-child policy, established in 1979 to limit population growth. Fines, pressure to abort, and even forced sterilizations accompany second or subsequent pregnancies. This rule has caused a disdain for female infants and the preference for sons over daughters, as sons carry on the family name, work the farms, and take care of elderly parents, while girls marry and move away.

Previous work by Will Cooper includes the play Book of Leaves, a finalist at the Ashland New Plays Festival, produced in 2006 at Village Players Theatre. An Honors English Literature major at Kenyon College, he attended graduate school in English Literature at the University of Chicago, and has studied playwriting at Chicago Dramatists and Victory Gardens Theater. Several of Cooper’s plays have been developed and workshopped at Chicago Dramatists, including Book of Leaves, Jade Heart, and Shadows of Athens.

Director Russ Tutterow has been the Artistic Director of Chicago Dramatists since 1986. At Chicago Dramatists, he has directed countless new play readings, and nurtured the art and careers of hundreds of playwrights, including Rebecca Gilman, Tina Fey, Sarah Ruhl, Rick Cleveland, David Barr, and Mia McCullough, to name just a few. Most recently, he directed Chicago Dramatists’ productions of A Steady Rain by Keith Huff, Water by Alice Austen (Jeff Award nomination for New Work), Voyeurs de Venus by Lydia R. Diamond (Jeff Award for New Work), Heat by Marsha Estell (Jeff Award nomination for New Work), and Drawing War by Brett Neveu. He also directed Prop Thtr’s acclaimed production of Rosemary by Jim O’Connor (2002 Jeff Citation for New Work).

Jade Heart stars Christine Timbol Bunuan as “Jade.” Christine Bunuan was in the Chicago company and the first national tour of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Her other credits include “Setsuko” & “Young Miss Saeke” in Kafka on the Shore (Steppenwolf Theatre), “Ching” in The Mistress Cycle (Apple Tree and Auditorium Theater), “Ghost of Christmas Past” in A Christmas Carol (The Goodman Theater), “Jasmine” in Aladdin (Marriott Theater Lincolnshire), and “Tinkerbell” in Peter Pan The Musical (Chicago Shakespeare Theater). She is a graduate of the Theatre School at DePaul University.

The cast of Jade Heart also features Eliza Shin (Shin Sueme 신수미) as Mu Chang, Ginger Lee McDermott as Brenda, Gordon Chow (曹健華 Cao Jian Wah) as Duan and Melissa Canciller as Mei.

The design team includes Tom Burch (set design), Jeff Pines (lighting design), Michael Griggs (sound design), Samantha Jones (costume design), and Jenniffer Thusing (props design and stage management.)

The performance schedule for Jade Heart is Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. Regular tickets are $25 for Thursday and Sunday performances and $30 for performances on Friday and Saturday. Student and Industry tickets are available for $10 on Thursday and Sunday performances. Group discounts are also available. For tickets, call Chicago Dramatists at 312.633.0630 or visit www.chicagodramatists.org for more information.
